So other than Wonder Girls coming down here last summer, I'm pretty sure Toronto has been neglected from kpop almost entirely. Although I hadn't thought of the original idea to host a flash mob here, I saw a post about one on facebook. It wasn't an event page and it was hard to see who was organizing and it was very messy and not friendly towards those who weren't admins.
Instead I thought I'd help by making an event page for them and let them know that they could use it. The next thing I know, I'm organizing a flash mob. It was very stressful to say the least. I had to deal with young people (although I'm not that only, I'm only 19) complaining about everything.
"Why isn't (INSERT SONG) in the mash up?"
"Shouldn't the mash up be longer?"

Some girl even had the nerve to make her own mash up.... that was 12 minutes long. I don't know why she thought people would have the time or patience to learn 12 minutes of choreography or why people would even watch a video of people dancing for 12 minutes.

Anyway, after much frustration of constantly answering the same questions, I sent out a mass message to everyone who rsvp'd to the event covering everything people had issues with. Man, that message was practically an essay, but at least after that I was no longer receiving irritating questions.

By the end of the month there were over 300 people confirmed for the event and about 200 maybes. To me this was scary. I alone had to deal with that many people? Was what I was thinking to myself. But I figured, hey a lot of people won't show up even if they're confirmed online. So although it did make me a bit sad, we had maybe 150-200 people show up. Not too bad. The day went by very quickly to say the least. I had a new friend from Ottawa doing interviews and getting tons of great footage, so to say I was organizing this alone would be a lie.
I did promote two friends to admins on the fb event, and they were quite helpful though I do regret it because I later realized that they also began receiving notifications for every small thing that someone posted on the wall.

The only thing that counts at the end of the day was that we all had fun, met tons of new friends with the same interest and were able to come together for a common goal, getting ourselves a Toronto SM Town. If you don't have me on facebook or twitter, here is the video :)

So I had to write a review for class, so I figured I might as well do something I'm familiar with. Kpop it was~ so I ended up doing U-kiss' new mini since it was Bran new at the time ;)

Take away the auto tune because you’ve really got yourself a brand new U-Kiss without it.
U-Kiss is a 7 member South Korean dance group. Last week they made their comeback on the music scene after a short 5-month break with their 5th mini album, “Bran New Kiss”.
Kibum Kim and Alexander Eusebio, two former members, left the group and were replaced right before this set of promotions by AJ aka Jaeseop Kim and Hoon Yeo.
With new members to balance out the vocals, U-Kiss made a transition from heavier dance/pop to a more melodic and calmer pop sound.
This change of new members and a new sound lost them many fans, but as a person who enjoys many genres of music, I found myself putting this album on repeat.
The lack of auto tune throughout this mini album when compared to their previous releases is a breath of fresh air.
“It’s Time”, their introduction track leads into the album very well with soft vocals and a delicate ambience building anticipation for the next song.
Their title track “0330” begins with a piano painting a peaceful scene and fades into the background but is still evident throughout the entire song. Emotional singing lures you in then a rap begins, but it’s not too heavy or in your face, which still keeps the mood of the song. The climax of the song is built up wonderfully with a powerful, hard-hitting note that almost pierces through your soul. U-Kiss’ live performances are always great to watch especially because of this climax.
“내게 아픈 말은(Naege appeun mareun/ Words that hurt me)” and “Every Day” are more upbeat when compared to the previous two songs, but the soft theme of their album is still apparent.
The last two songs of the album, “I Don’t Understand” and “Miracle” is like a blast to the past. The moment I heard them, I felt as if I was listening to a song from 10 years ago. Both are very fun, and “Miracle” puts you in a happy, feel good mood.
Overall their album stays consistent within itself but presents a brilliant new sound for the group as a whole. Change is not always bad, it leaves room for improvement, and U-Kiss has improved by miles. I definitely look forward to seeing them this month in Los Angeles.
So the beginning of my actual stay in Korea begins. Let's start from Friday, February 25th.

One of the best days of my lifeCollapse )

So for the very first time I will be travelling by myself. It's the first time I'll have been on a plane since I was four, and it'll be the first time I've left the country in about 5-6 years. I pretty much plan on blogging about my trip here since I don't really feel like opening up a new blog and I never use this one anyway. Also this is mainly for a friend. My flight for South Korea will be leaving in about 33 hours. I have not yet packed. I'm still kinda not even feeling the realness of this situation. But I'm super excited.

Big Show here I come 8D
One year from August 25th, 2010, I will most definitely have completed this project. Yes, I know I have high hopes for myself.

Donnie Darko was the start to my project. I had gone into this movie completely oblivious to what this film was about, so I had no expectations at all. Alright so let's get this review started.

Donnie Darko is not a film you cannot just stop watching half way through. To understand it and to see everything come together you need to watch until the very end. It has a very unique and unpredictable plot in which you are caught up in a mindfuck until the last scene. Well written, and a classic mindfuck.

Superb acting is superb. The cast of Donnie Darko delivered and brought a wonderful performance in which each character was presented well. Jake Gyllenhaal, although young at the time played the role of Donnie, a somewhat disturbed youth. His presentation of this character was so authentic it was scary.

The themes Donnie Darko takes on is part of what makes it so amazing. Free will vs. destiny is the most prominent, wherein Donnie must make the choice whether to follow what must be done, or to fight and decide for himself. Time travel is touched upon, alongside the idea of parallel universes.

Soundtrack: To be honest, the movie was wonderful, but the soundtrack was not memorable.

All in all, Donnie Darko was entertaining. It was fun, dark, enjoyable and a film that you must see if you have not yet already. Fun note: I did not realise there was a rabbit on the cover of the dvd until the movie was over / fail

Yeah, I should probably try coming up with a better project name.

Alright so the basic outline of this project is to watch and review 182 films that I have not yet seen within a year. Sounds easy? Sure. Although I doubt I'll be saying this when I have a stressful school and work life. But hey, I'm always up for a challenge.

I was inspired by my friend Rodrigo who is, I suppose, the creator of this project. You can find him here http://182movies1year.blogspot.com/

Unfortunately I have not yet compiled my entire list, and still have maybe 78 to find. I will add on to my list as I watch the films that are currently there.

This project has officially begun.
